Menopause is an important phase of every woman's life. As the beginning of the menstrual cycle is essential for a female body, likewise menopause is. It symbolizes the end of menstruation as the ovaries stop releasing an egg every month. It is remarked by the absence of a menstrual cycle in the consecutive period of the last 12 months and usually happens between the age of 45 years and 55 years.

How can menopausal skin glow?

Though menopause is an obligatory stage in every woman’s life; it is like a nightmare for some. Hormonal imbalance, reduced estrogen and progesterone levels, hot flashes, insomnia, vulnerable bones and joints, weight gain, extreme dryness on the skin, fine lines, and reduced libido alarm the onset of menopause.

Adapting a good diet and positive lifestyle changes not only aids in maintaining skin health but also helps in making the process as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Incorporate these healthy diet changes in your daily lifestyle after your 40s and see the magic reflecting on your skin.

  •  Include 3-4 servings of calcium-rich food every day in your diet. Apart from dairy products; white sesame seeds, broccoli, Kale, sunflower seeds, tofu, figs, chia seeds, almonds, soy milk, oranges, okra (ladyfinger), and sweet potatoes are rich sources of calcium. Non-vegetarians can include fish with bones in their diet like sardines and canned salmon.
  • Consume a minimum of 3 servings of iron-rich food in a day to add a glowing blush to your cheeks. Green leafy vegetables, jaggery, dried fruits, apples, bananas, pomegranates, and beans are major sources of iron. Red meat, pork, poultry, and seafood are add-ons for non-vegetarians.
  • You should also consume an appropriate amount of vitamin C so that your body can absorb iron efficiently. Apart from citrus fruits, vitamin C is found abundantly in broccoli, kiwi, gooseberry, strawberry, tomatoes, melon, grapefruit, and tangerine. Intake of Vitamin C makes your skin glow from the inside.
  • Soak your body into the morning sunlight for 90-120 minutes daily. This will fulfill your vitamin D requirements which help in better absorption of calcium into bones. However, it is advisable to use sunscreen on the face to avoid its harmful effects on its delicate skin.
  • Enrich your body with high-fiber meals like whole grains, bread, lentils, broccoli, avocado, berries, apples, nuts, etc. Your gut as well as your skin will be thankful to you.
  • Include 2-3 servings of fruits in your daily diet. Eat as many vegetables as you can. This will also help you to keep a check on unwanted weight gain.
  • Include protein-rich foods in your daily diet for healthy muscles and hair. Vegetarians should consume tofu, soya, low-fat cottage cheese, gram flour, lentils, beans, and chickpeas for their protein needs.
  • Add healthy fats to your diet instead of saturated fat and trans fat. Nuts, seeds, olive oil, almond butter/oil, peanut butter/oil, avocado, canola oil, salmon, sardines, trout, and tofu improve the quality of your life.
  • Keep an eye on your excess sugar, salt, and fat intake. They incorporate into our diet hiddenly via full cream milk, seeds, nuts, cooked vegetables, pickles, coconut flour, and other items.
  • Avoid intake of processed carbs, alcohol, packaged food, spicy food, and smoke. They trigger perimenopause.
  •  Cut down your caffeine intake. Replace your cup of tea or coffee with herbs or spice-infused water.
  •  Include different colors of foods in your daily diet.
  • Keep your body hydrated. Drink 8-10 glasses of water and a glass of fruits/ vegetable juice.

  • Indulge in any physical activity of your choice for at least 30 minutes every day. You can do any activity of your choice- walk, yoga, aerobics, swimming, cycling, hiking, dancing, playing outdoor games, etc.

How to take care of skin in Menopause- Menopausal Face Treatment

Apart from fine lines, wrinkles, and reduced plumpiness, dryness is the most common symptom of menopausal skin. Blame the dropped level of your hormones- estrogen and progesterone. Some women face acne and redness on the skin due to hot flashes.

As the skin changes are rapid due to extreme fluctuations in the hormonal level, you cannot do much with the topical application. But, at the same time, it doesn't mean that you should be totally negligent with your skin health and let it get worse day-by-day. Adding a Vitamin A, C, & E rich essential oil, diluted with cold pressed carrier oil, to your daily skincare regime will help you boost your postmenopausal collagen, and reduce menopausal skin problems to a great extent.
